Reddit AMA: How to Be a Band Leader

How do I run rehearsals? How do I manage my band?

Reddit AMA: How to Be a Band Leader

Congratulations! We have composed music and are ready to put it out into the world with a live ensemble. Whether we have a group of like minded musicians or are paying a working band, there are some considerations to take into account.

Set the tone

As bandleaders it is our responsibility to establish rehearsal and gig etiquette. Whether a loose jam session or a strict rehearsal, other players look to us to guide behavior. Democracy or dictatorship, as bandleaders, final decisions rest on our shoulders.

Example | Rehearsal

“Here are charts, we are going to run the set down, does anyone have question about parts before we start? We can do notes after each tune.”

When there are issues in a tune

“Let’s rep the C section a couple of times, then do the transitions in and out, if it’s still rough we can all take it home and shed.”

Be punctual

No one will respect your time if you don’t respect theirs.

*Don’t be overly punctual

I’m a drummer and I know it takes me 25 minutes to set up my kit, prepped for line check. Please don’t tell me to show up 2 hours before the hit. If the manager/booking agent wants a body present 2 hours prior, that is your business.

Know your tunes

It should go without saying that as the composer we should be able to perform our own music. In addition we should be able to give direction regarding other individuals performances. This direction can be specific or general as is required by the piece of music:

Specific: Here is a through composed section you need to play verbatim

General: During the B section you just jam over a D7 harmony

As the bandleader it is not necessary to perform or compose an entire arrangement, however, it is in our best interest to be able to communicate parts and ideas to others using common vernacular.

Charts/Recordings

As bandleaders we need to make our band-mates lives easy. Write our basic charts and record scratch tracks of any ideas you plan to tease out. Projecting a new tune with a band is great, but it can be exponentially more productive with a chart or recording.

Command rehearsal

Other musicians look to us for guidance, be decisive and prepared to lead. Some ego required.

Differ to wisdom / Open to ideas

Check your ego at the door. Listen to the band. We hired/are-friends-with them for a reason. Keep an eqaunamous mind.

Conclusion

Running a band is an interesting challange. Provide constructive feedback to your bandmates, and be willing to adapt to different situations. Keep an even head, and take care of your people.  If you want folks to work with you  don’t be an asshole.

Bonus Tips

  • Record your rehearsal and listen back with a critical ear

  • Bring a six pack or a a round of coffee to the rehearsal

  • Always pay people what they are owed, on time. If the other musicians are playing for free, see the tip above

  • Break bread with your fellow musicians before or after a gig/rehearsal

  • Play for other bandleaders, take note, then craft how you want to run rehearsals
